Knowing

What is the good in knowing
a growing distant rain,
a father's fragrant valley,
a mother's passion pain,
a daughter's girl-smile,
a son's man-refrain?
Why is our mood now showing
October leaves in May,
a money's pleasure
my old ones could not say,
a poor one's treasure,
they that have all gone away?
Where is our food now growing,
that fools could not say,
science would not measure
and wealth will never gain?
Could the good in knowing be
the knowing, the life?
The surprise that enters sweet
like the taste of winter sugarcane
in the early morning, on a smelly,
sleepy mexican street.
